WHAT IS ULTRASOUND IMAGING?
Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Gel is applied to the skin to prevent air pockets from forming that can prevent the sound waves from traveling. Then, a trained technician (sonographer) will use a small, hand-held device (transducer) against your skin slowly to produce an image of the body’s internal organs in real-time. Ultrasound images show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. These images are reviewed by nursing staff and doctors to determine a medical diagnosis.
